Nigeria’s internet subscriber base increased by 1.88 million in October 2024, reaching 134.78 million, up from 132.9 million in September.

This is in line with the most recent report released on Wednesday by the Nigerian Communications Commission.

The NCC data showed that mobile (GSM) networks accounted for 134.27 million of the total internet users, with fixed wired and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) contributing the remaining subscribers.

The report highlighted gains across major telecom operators, except for 9mobile.

MTN Nigeria led the increase, adding 1.13 million new subscribers to reach 69.52 million in October, up from 68.39 million in September.

Airtel followed, with an increase of 678,219 subscribers, bringing its total to 45.47 million. Globacom also recorded growth, adding 184,887 new users, raising its subscriber base to 17.10 million.

In contrast, 9mobile’s internet subscribers declined by 125,780, dropping from 2.29 million in September to 2.16 million in October.

The NCC report also noted a rise in overall telephony subscriptions, which increased by 2.69 million to 157.37 million in October.

MTN maintained its lead with 80.37 million subscribers, while Airtel recorded 54.44 million, Globacom 19.10 million, and 9mobile 3.33 million.

Broadband penetration grew to 42.24% in October, up from 41.56 per cent in September, reflecting the continued expansion of internet services in Nigeria.

The NCC also reported an increase in data usage, which rose to 870,398.28 terabytes in October, compared to 850,249.09 terabytes in September.

The increase in internet subscriptions highlights the growing need for digital connection as well as telecom providers’ continuous attempts to build out their nationwide network infrastructure.
