Practices To Ensure Survival And Wellness In Today’s Nigeria

In today’s Nigeria, the pressures of life can be overwhelming. Between the rising cost of living, inflation, long commutes, and constant hustle, it’s easy to neglect our well-being. Yet, our health is our greatest asset, and in a country like ours where uncertainty is a constant, it is more important than ever to prioritize our survival and wellness. This article offers simple but effective practices to help Nigerians thrive, not just survive, in these difficult times.

1. Prioritize Eating Healthy

Plan Your Meals to Maximize Nutritional Value and Minimize Waste

Food prices in Nigeria have been steadily rising, making it harder for many to maintain a nutritious diet. However, with careful planning, it’s possible to eat healthy even on a budget. Consider preparing meals in advance and buying ingredients in bulk where possible. This allows you to focus on the quality of your meals while also minimizing food waste. Local foods like yam, plantains, beans, and vegetables offer excellent nutritional value and are often more affordable than imported goods. Planning ahead also prevents you from resorting to fast food options that are unhealthy and often more expensive in the long run.

Make Breakfast a Priority

In Nigeria, many people skip breakfast due to time constraints or financial pressures, yet this meal is critical to your energy levels throughout the day. A healthy breakfast could be as simple as a bowl of oats, pap with akara, or a nutritious smoothie with locally sourced fruits like pawpaw or banana. Starting your day with a balanced meal improves mental clarity, supports metabolism, and reduces cravings later in the day. In the face of economic challenges, having a solid, nutritious breakfast doesn’t have to be expensive; the key is making smart, cost-effective choices.

2. Engage in Regular Exercise

Use Online Resources for Home Workouts

While gym memberships can be costly, maintaining an active lifestyle doesn’t require a gym. With the rise of free fitness content on platforms like YouTube, anyone can find workout routines that fit their space and schedule. Whether it’s a 10-minute morning stretch, simple bodyweight exercises like squats, push-ups, or even online dance classes, you can get your blood pumping without stepping foot into a gym. All you need is a bit of space in your living room, and you can start today.

Incorporate Walking into Your Routine

In many Nigerian cities, walking can be an effective form of exercise, especially given the heavy traffic and limited space in some areas. Walking for just 20 to 30 minutes a day — whether it’s to the market, to work, or just around your neighborhood — can really boost cardiovascular health, improve mood, and reduce stress. If possible, try to walk briskly rather than strolling. And if you work in an office, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or do short walks during breaks. This commitment to regular movement, no matter how small, can have long-lasting benefits for both physical and mental wellness.

3. Prioritize Quality Sleep

Sleep is often undervalued, particularly in Nigeria, where many people juggle multiple jobs, endure long commutes, and battle daily stressors. The average adult needs approximately 7-8 hours of sleep each night for optimal health. Unfortunately, most Nigerians do not achieve this, often sacrificing sleep in a bid to make ends meet. The consequences of sleep deprivation include impaired concentration, weakened immune function, and increased risk of chronic diseases. By making sleep a priority, you allow your body to recover, your brain to reset, and your energy to be replenished for the demands of the day ahead.

4. Schedule Regular Health Check-ups

The adage “health is wealth” is as relevant as ever. In the midst of Nigeria’s hustle and bustle, many people neglect to prioritize their health. Regular health checkups are crucial for early detection of potential issues and preventive care. Simple tests like checking your blood pressure, monitoring sugar levels, and assessing cholesterol levels can help avert serious health complications. By investing in routine health assessments, you stand a better chance of maintaining a strong immune system and overall wellness. This practice can also reduce long-term healthcare costs, as preventive care is often less expensive than treating full-blown illnesses.

Finally, surviving and thriving in today’s Nigeria requires more than just financial stability; it calls for a holistic approach to health and wellness. From prioritizing balanced meals and regular exercise to ensuring proper rest and proactive healthcare, these practices can enhance your quality of life. In the face of economic adversity, focusing on your well-being is not a luxury but a necessity. Remember, your health remains your greatest asset and the foundation upon which you can build and sustain your goals. By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you increase your resilience and capacity to navigate the challenges of modern Nigeria.
