The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reports that three towers on its 330kV Lokoja-Gwagwalada transmission line have been seriously damaged in yet another incident of vandalism. TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah said the incident occurred early on Saturday and caused the line’s bulk power flow to be disrupted.
After an attempt to re-energise the line tripped, TCN’s inspection team discovered damage to the afflicted towers, designated T306, T307, and T308. In addition to causing damage to the buildings, the vandals took two aluminium conductor spans from the line. TCN is still using a different line to supply electricity to the affected areas in spite of the setback.
Mbah highlights that the incident follows a worrying trend of vandalism targeting Nigeria’s power infrastructure. Previous attacks on lines like the Gwagwalada-Kukuwaba-Apo in December 2023 and the Gwagwalada-Katampe line in February 2024 have hindered efforts to stabilize the national grid, causing frequent outages.
“This destruction undercuts national progress and delays our efforts to restore reliable power supply,” Mbah stated, calling on communities and security agencies to support efforts in deterring such sabotage. To provide steady power for everyone, TCN is calling on Nigerians to resist this persistent infrastructure threat.
