West Ham take lead in race to facilitate Raphael Onyedika Transfer from Club Brugge

The Raphael Onyedika transfer saga is heating up this summer, with West Ham United emerging as the frontrunner to sign the Nigerian midfielder from Club Brugge. While several European clubs have shown interest, it is the Hammers and Everton who appear most serious, with reports suggesting West Ham have made a “concrete” bid for the 23-year-old.

Valued at €30 million, Onyedika has quickly become one of the most talked-about midfield prospects in Europe. The Nigerian international joined Club Brugge in 2022 from Danish side Midtjylland for €9.5 million, and has since impressed with his dynamic performances, versatility, and physical presence in the middle of the park.

West Ham makes a serious move

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, West Ham’s offer is not just speculative, it’s concrete. The club’s pursuit of Onyedika comes at a time when they’re urgently looking to strengthen their midfield following a lacklustre performance in that area last season. With a need for fresh legs, pace, and box-to-box stamina, Onyedika seems to fit the mold perfectly.

Fans of the London-based club have been vocal about the need for upgrades in midfield, especially as the team struggled to maintain control in key matches. Onyedika’s high energy, pressing ability, and ball-winning skills make him an ideal candidate for David Moyes, or whoever takes the reins for the upcoming season.

Everton is also in the mix

Everton have not been left behind in the Raphael Onyedika transfer chase. The Toffees are reportedly in “advanced talks” with the Belgian club, although no official bid has been confirmed publicly. With midfield dynamo Amadou Onana potentially on the move, Everton could see Onyedika as a direct replacement or as part of a broader rebuild under Sean Dyche.

Despite their precarious financial situation, Everton is believed to be exploring creative financing options to make the deal happen. Whether that’s through player sales or staggered payments remains to be seen, but their interest is very much real.

What about AC Milan and Leeds United?

Italian giants AC Milan were initially linked with Onyedika as a potential replacement for Tijjani Reijnders, who has reportedly agreed terms with Manchester City. However, their interest appears to have cooled in recent weeks, with West Ham and Everton pulling ahead.

Leeds United have also been monitoring the situation closely. With their squad needing upgrades to challenge for Premier League promotion, Onyedika was seen as a dream addition. However, the player’s €30 million price tag may prove too steep for the Championship side, especially with other midfield targets like Ao Tanaka and Habib Diarra still on their radar.

Why Raphael Onyedika is in demand

Standing out in the Belgian Pro League is no easy feat, but Onyedika has done just that. At 23, he already brings valuable Champions League experience and has shown composure beyond his years. Described by scouts as energetic, strong in duels, and tactically intelligent, his profile ticks a lot of boxes for clubs aiming to build a younger, more athletic midfield.

With two years left on his contract, Club Brugge is under no immediate pressure to sell, but they’ve reportedly accepted that a summer move is inevitable. Their €30 million valuation, roughly £25 million, has not deterred West Ham, and talks are progressing quickly.

Nigerian fans watch with keen interest

The Raphael Onyedika transfer also carries weight back home in Nigeria, where fans are eager to see another Super Eagles player feature regularly in the English Premier League. Should the move materialize, Onyedika would join a growing list of Nigerian internationals thriving in the EPL, further boosting his chances of locking down a permanent spot in the national team setup.

For Nigerian football, this transfer would serve as another reminder of the country’s growing talent pipeline and the global demand for its players. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers looming, consistent club minutes in a top European league could prove vital for Onyedika’s international aspirations.

What’s next?

As it stands, West Ham is in pole position to complete the deal. Everton remains in the race, but with West Ham’s intent and financial strength, the outcome may depend on how quickly they can finalize personal terms and sort logistics with Club Brugge.

With the Premier League’s summer transfer window still in its early stages, there’s time for twists and turns. But if the Raphael Onyedika transfer to West Ham goes through, it could mark one of the smartest pieces of business for the East London club in recent years.
