Super Falcons Humble Zambia with 5-Star Performance

Super Falcons vs Zambia WAFCON 2024 was billed as one of the quarterfinal clashes to watch, a showdown between Africa’s most decorated team and the continent’s fast-rising force. In the end, it was a one-sided affair in Casablanca as Nigeria dismantled Zambia 5-0 to storm into the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Falcons showed no mercy from the opening whistle, capitalizing on defensive lapses and controlling the tempo with a blend of grit and flair. The win not only avenged their loss to Zambia in the 2022 bronze match but also underlined Nigeria’s intent to reclaim their crown.

Ruthless Start from the Super Falcons

It took just two minutes for Nigeria to send a warning shot. Osinachi Ohale opened the floodgates with a powerful header from Esther Okoronkwo’s floating free-kick, catching Zambia’s defense flat-footed.

Zambia’s Grace Chanda had a golden opportunity to equalize but squandered the chance, and she was made to pay moments later when Okoronkwo doubled Nigeria’s lead. Controlling Rasheedat Ajibade’s cross with finesse, she buried the ball into the corner for 2-0.

The Copper Queens looked rattled and disjointed. On the brink of halftime, Chinwendu Ihezuo added a third with a composed finish after a long clearance from goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie exposed Zambia’s high line.

Second-Half Show Still All Nigeria

Nigeria’s dominance continued in the second half of Super Falcons vs Zambia WAFCON 2024 as Oluwatosin Demehin rose highest to nod in a fourth from another Okoronkwo set piece. In stoppage time, Folashade Ijamilusi capped the rout with a tidy finish at the back post from a Rasheedat Ajibade delivery.

For a Zambian side that came into the tournament with World Cup experience and attacking firepower in Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, the result was a bitter blow. Neither of their star forwards registered a shot on target, a testament to Nigeria’s disciplined defensive setup.

Tactical Shifts Pay Off for Nigeria

Interim coach Justin Madugu made six changes from the previous goalless draw against Algeria, including giving Okoronkwo her first start of the tournament. The decision proved inspired, with the forward contributing a goal and two assists.

Madugu’s game plan was simple but effective: dominate possession, press Zambia’s defenders early, and exploit their vulnerability on set pieces. The Super Falcons executed the plan to perfection.

While Asisat Oshoala started on the bench, the strength in depth was evident. The likes of Toni Payne and Deborah Abiodun came on late to maintain control, while the starting lineup showed chemistry and balance rarely seen in Nigeria’s recent outings.

Defensive Solidity Sets the Tone

Another key storyline from Super Falcons vs Zambia WAFCON 2024 was Nigeria’s unbreached defense. This was the fourth consecutive clean sheet for the Falcons, with goalkeeper Nnadozie marshalling the backline expertly.

Credit also goes to defenders Ashleigh Plumptre, Michelle Alozie, and Oluwatosin Demehin, who nullified Zambia’s famed pace and transitions with smart positioning and aggressive ball-winning.

What’s Next?

Nigeria will now face the winner of South Africa vs Senegal in Tuesday’s semi-final, in what could be another high-stakes clash. With the defending champions possibly lying in wait, the path to a 10th title will only get tougher.

However, this emphatic win sends a clear message: the Super Falcons are back in form and hungry for glory.

Final Thoughts

Super Falcons vs Zambia WAFCON 2024 was more than just a quarterfinal; it was a statement. A 5-0 demolition job against a rising Zambian team speaks volumes about Nigeria’s preparation, mentality, and pedigree.

With just two wins now separating them from continental supremacy, the Super Falcons have reignited belief across Nigeria and raised alarm bells across Africa.
