In a last-minute decision, President Donald Trump has granted TikTok a 75-day extension, delaying a potential ban on the popular Chinese-owned app, which was set to take effect on April 5. The move comes just days before the looming deadline.
Trump, in a post shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, made it clear that his administration is actively working on a solution to ensure TikTok remains operational. He expressed confidence in securing a deal, stating, “My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress.”
The extension, according to Trump, would provide additional time for necessary approvals to be finalized. “The deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days,” he wrote.
This extension comes after the ban was initially postponed in January, just as Trump returned to office. The deadline, originally set for April 5, has now been extended yet again.
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has faced increasing pressure to divest its US operations. This follows bipartisan legislation passed in 2024, which mandates the separation of the app from Chinese ownership.
Trump also took the opportunity to criticize China, suggesting that the country had been frustrated by his economic policies, particularly reciprocal tariffs. “We hope to continue working in good faith with China,” Trump added, emphasizing that tariffs are “the most powerful economic tool” and are vital to ensuring national security.
“We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark,’” Trump concluded, reaffirming his intention to reach an agreement that allows the app to continue operating in the U.S.
