4 Signs Your Child May Be Struggling With A Gaming Disorder—And How You Can Help

As gaming continues to rise in popularity, many children are finding new ways to play excessively, often without their parents’ knowledge. Here’s what experts say parents should watch for and the steps they can take to address potential gaming addiction.

Key Points:

  • Gaming disorders in children may manifest in subtle but noticeable ways.
  • Signs include increased secrecy, shifts in social behavior, and neglect of personal hygiene.
  • Experts share insights on recognizing gaming addiction and advice on helping children develop healthier habits.

With online gaming booming, many parents worry about its impact on children’s well-being. Although gaming can be a fun pastime, when it becomes excessive, it may harm a child’s mental and physical health, as well as their academic and social lives. Recognizing the signs of a gaming disorder early can be crucial for parents to help their children maintain a balanced life.

Gaming addiction may initially go unnoticed, but Marin Cristian-Ovidiu, CEO of FreezeNova Games, underscores the importance of vigilance: “Early intervention is key. The sooner a potential gaming disorder is addressed, the better the chances for a positive outcome.”

Here are four subtle signs of gaming addiction and strategies for parents to guide their children toward healthier habits.

1. Increased Secrecy

A child may go to great lengths to conceal their gaming time, becoming defensive or secretive about their activities. Marin explains, “Gaming often creates a private world where children feel they can escape responsibilities, which can lead them to hide their habits.”

Example: A child who once played openly in shared spaces now spends hours in their room with the door closed, avoiding questions about their activities.

Advice: Marin suggests, “Start with an open conversation. Approach them with empathy, focusing on understanding the reasons behind their secrecy. This helps build trust and opens the door to discussing the effects of excessive gaming on their well-being.”

2. Shift in Social Behaviors

When gaming becomes a priority, some children may withdraw from social interactions or lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. While gaming can offer social engagement, it can also encourage isolation as they spend more time alone or online.

Example: A previously social child now skips friend meet-ups and extracurriculars to play video games.

Advice: “Encourage involvement in diverse activities such as sports, arts, or hobbies,” Marin recommends. “Alternative activities offer social benefits and help balance screen time.”

3. Unusual Sleep Patterns

Excessive gaming, especially at night, can disrupt sleep, impacting a child’s energy, mood, and performance in school. Gaming can be highly stimulating, making it difficult for children to wind down and sleep well.

Example: A child who previously followed a regular bedtime now stays up late playing games, struggling to wake up in the morning.

Advice: “Setting gaming limits is essential,” Marin advises. “Establish a daily gaming limit, introduce game-free days, or set specific hours for gaming—particularly avoiding playtime close to bedtime.”

4. Neglecting Personal Hygiene

For some children, gaming takes precedence over personal care. When personal hygiene falls by the wayside, it’s often a sign that gaming has taken an unhealthy hold, potentially leading to physical and emotional issues.

Example: A child may wear the same clothes for several days, skip showers, or avoid brushing their teeth, sometimes making excuses for the neglect.

Advice: Marin suggests that if gaming behavior has escalated to this point, professional counseling can help address underlying issues. “Neglecting self-care shows that gaming is overpowering their sense of responsibility toward personal hygiene,” he says.

Final Thoughts from Marin Cristian-Ovidiu

“Parents should remain attentive to these signs and take appropriate steps if gaming is affecting their child’s health or daily life. Open communication, healthy boundaries, and balanced activities can foster a positive relationship with gaming and prevent it from spiraling into addiction.

“Above all, patience and understanding are essential,” Marin adds. “With consistent support and clear communication, families can navigate this issue together and help their child find a healthier balance.”
